This Madras Plaid Cushion from the Skye Collection gives the subtle and expected richness of the Highland Tartan. This plaid cushion is an interpretation of the early Madras Plaids. The multi-colour exudes a warmth that embraces the history of Scottish design culture migration to India.
The East India Company transported from the Scottish highlands the design and manufacturing of tartan to the indigenous Coromandel Coast weaving families, the producers of the traditional Madras calico and block-printed cloth. The Coromandel weaver used natural vegetable dyes that were unstable when washed. This process gave rise to the term “Bleeding Madras”. In the USA, the Brooks Brothers of New York promoted this bleeding of the colours, which became a best-selling fabric.
In the 20thcentury, through the trading of Brooks Brothers, the Madras Plaid hit the world stage to become the fabric choice for many American men.
This joyous cushion lends itself to both modern and traditional interiors and blends with fun with our Scottish woven 100% tartan wool cushions.
This woven fabric is of a beautiful quality. Both front and back are the same quality and weight fabric.
The piping is a dark forest green, melding with the dark jade green and forest green of the plaid. The reverse side is a rich navy blue again found in the vibrant plaid.
All our cushions are padded allowing the fabrics to hold their shape.
